Black Poplar

One of the U.K.s rarest species of tree. The timber of the black poplar had been a desirable product with qualities such as fire resistance and shock absorbency meaning a steady demand for the timber during the 17th and 18th centuries. This demand trailed off with the advent of faster growing hybrid species during the early 19th century. In 2007 forest research tested all black poplar clones on the market at the time and found that there were in fact only 22 unique clones.
